Microsoft CAL Suites: Streamline Your Server Access and Save

Navigating access rights can be quite a task, especially when you’re dealing with various Microsoft products that each need a CAL (Client Access License). It’s not only complex; it can devour your time. Why not simplify the process and save some money with a CAL Suite?

What Exactly is a CAL Suite?

A CAL Suite bundles all essential access licenses into one package. The software bundle thus consists of a license for a user or device that includes access rights to various Microsoft services contained within. Particularly for companies using multiple Microsoft server products, this can be a practical and cost-effective option. CAL Suites simplify licensing and, compared to individual purchases, significant cost savings can also be achieved.

Save Over 50%

CAL Suites can already be worth it with just two server licenses. For example: a company that uses server classics like Windows Server 2019 and Exchange Server 2019 saves over half. The Core CAL Suite 2019 currently costs only €24.50 in our store. In contrast, individually purchased User CALs amount to around €56 (€36 for Exchange Server 2019 User CAL and €19.90 for Windows Server 2019 User CAL).

What CAL Suite Options Are There?

There are two versions of the CAL Suite: the Microsoft Core CAL Suite and the Microsoft Enterprise CAL Suite.

The Core CAL Suite includes, among others, licenses for the standard editions of Windows Server, Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and Skype for Business.

The Enterprise CAL Suite also includes these access rights. Additionally, it covers access to the enterprise editions of server products as well as other services, as the table shows.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Downgrade: Just like individual CALs, CAL Suites include downgrade rights. This means all earlier versions of a license are included. For instance, if you have a CAL Suite 2022, it allows you access to Windows Server 2022 or alternatively to earlier versions like Windows Server 2016 or 2019.

User or Device: A Microsoft CAL Suite can – just like any other CAL – be licensed per user or per device. Device CALs are device-related and are particularly suitable when several employees in the company share a workstation. User CALs, on the other hand, are assigned to a user and are sensible if employees work with multiple devices (e.g., PC in the office and laptop at home). An overview of the different CALs is provided in our explainer video: CALs Made Simple.
